Digital Decade

This is how the EU achieved humanity’s first AI regulation through the “Digital Decade” initiative.

In March 2018, the commission appointed a group on Artificial Intelligence to gather input from experts and convene a broad alliance of diverse stakeholders.

The expert group also drafted a proposal for ethical guidelines on artificial intelligence.

And in March 2021, the “Digital Decade” plan initiative was announced for the first time.

This program sets digital objectives for the upcoming decade

Which I can summarize in 5 points:

  1. a digitally skilled population
  1. highly qualified digital professionals;
  1. secure and sustainable digital infrastructures;
  1. digital transformation of businesses;
  1. digitalization of public services.

This and many initiatives, proposals, laws, and more have been marking the steps toward the regulation being sought — to ensure the safety of users of social networks, the internet, and technology in general.

And if you notice, all these proposed objectives or timeline steps are accompanied by an extremely crucial requirement.

And quoting the official EU page:

“safety guaranteeing that AI is a force for good for humanity.”

So if you look closely at the timeline, you will realize there were almost 30 significant achievements and several years to reach the regulation.
