Tunde Onakoya, the chess master, recently surprised everyone. When? At a Chess exhibition held in early 2024. As part of the “Designing Digital Life Conference.” Tunde Onakoya played against 10 opponents simultaneously and won all the games. Among them was a match against the former Bulgarian minister and United Nations member who holds a PhD in Mathematical Logic.
During this exhibition, he managed to raise enough money to provide education for 100 more children at his chess academy, where he supports underprivileged kids.
Background of the Chess Master
Tunde Onakoya is a Nigerian chess player and founder of “Chess in Slums” Africa. The organization was created in 2018 to offer growth and learning opportunities to children, aiming to lift them out of poverty using chess as the focal point.
Onakoya learned to play chess in a barbershop in his hometown Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria. He lived in poverty, and his mother managed to keep him in school by working as a janitor there.
Fortunately, his efforts paid off, as he was ranked the #13 chess player in Nigeria and became a Gold Medalist at the Nigerian Polytechnic Games representing his school, Yaba College of Technology.
He also won the “Chevron Chess Open” as well as the “National Friends of Chess.”
Interesting, isn’t it?
It’s impressive how pursuing a dream with discipline can take you to the peak of success. Even more so, being able to give back a little to the community that saw you grow. The support Onakoya provides to the children of Nigeria gives them the opportunity to move forward and chase their dreams.
