Today, January 24th, marks 40 years since the first Macintosh was released to the market. A computer that came to revolutionize the tech world. Its main goal was to simplify the interface for users.
How? By replacing memorization of commands with visual element selections on the screen. Being one of Mac’s selling points:
“The true genius of Macintosh is that you don’t have to be a genius to use it.”
Features of the Macintosh 128K
The Macintosh 128k had the following features:
- It weighed 7.5 KG
- Its screen measured 9 inches.
- And it had 128 KB of RAM memory, hence the name Macintosh 128k.
The Macintosh or Mac went on sale on January 24, 1984, in the United States. It has been 40 years since the Macintosh was released and it has not stopped innovating since. It was priced at $2,495 USD. This price was lower than IBM computers of that time, but higher than the Apple II computer. It is estimated that around 372,000 Macintosh units were sold, a quite high number for its time.
It had no virtual memory, so you could only use one application or program at a time. Also, its trash bin was emptied upon restarting the device.
Where is the 40-year-old Macintosh?
This model can be found displayed at the Computer History Museum located in Mountain View, California, United States. Also, in the city of Savona, northern Italy, there is a museum with a collection of almost every single item from the brand since 1976. Remarkably, they still work and the public can use them.
The creative community has been a loyal user of the brand. However, in recent years, users of all profiles have been added, from students to workers in all fields.
