Universal leaves TikTok, what is the real reason? We all heard the news that Universal Music Group withdrew its catalog of songs from TikTok. That is why videos with music from:
- Taylor Swift, The Weekend
- Elton John
- the Beatles themselves, and
- many more.
were abruptly silenced. Since the contract they had ended on January 31st. From February 1st, ALL their music disappeared from the platform.
But why is Universal leaving TikTok?
In an open letter on Universal’s official website, it is mentioned that their main goal is to protect the rights of artists and songwriters. And since TikTok has openly stated that its great success is due to the music on the platform, Universal Music tried to renew the contract with three main requests:
- Proper compensation for their artists and songwriters
- Protection against the use of Artificial Intelligence
- Online safety for TikTok users.
Regarding the financial issue, it is highlighted that Universal has contracts with other platforms like Instagram, for example, and TikTok is the one that pays the least for music usage rights. Without revealing official figures, Universal only mentions that TikTok represents just 1% of their income.
On the other hand, Universal also mentions in this letter that they tried to negotiate with TikTok. And the platform responded with threats and hurtful actions towards emerging artists, removing them from its catalog first but keeping the major artists.
For this and many other reasons, Universal did not give in to intimidation. They continued requesting protection from a platform that allows the use of deepfakes. Besides not providing proper security for its users and copyright protections.
And although it is known that the most affected by this decision will be the viewers and fans, Universal remains firm in protecting the rights of their artists and songwriters.
Could this be the beginning of TikTok’s downfall and Instagram’s opportunity to come back?
