AT&T Introduces Wireless Account Lock to Combat SIM Swapping Threats

AT&T has launched a new feature aimed at helping customers protect themselves from SIM swapping — a growing form of cyberattack that allows scammers to hijack a user’s mobile number to bypass two-factor authentication and access sensitive accounts.

The new feature, called Wireless Account Lock, is now available for postpaid AT&T customers through the myAT&T mobile app. Once enabled via a simple toggle switch, the feature restricts all major account changes until it is manually turned off within the app on the original device.

With Wireless Account Lock activated, users are blocked from performing the following actions:

  • Changing the SIM card or eSIM
  • Upgrading a device
  • Adding a new phone line
  • Modifying billing information
  • Switching phone numbers
  • Transferring devices
  • Changing authorized users

The goal is to add an extra layer of defense against SIM swap fraud by requiring physical access to the device where the app is installed before any major account changes can be made.

Given AT&T’s recent high-profile data breach settlement, this move appears to be part of broader efforts to restore customer trust and strengthen account-level security.

If you’re an AT&T customer, enabling this feature could be a smart step toward protecting your mobile identity — especially in today’s threat landscape.
